Tattoo Removal

Tattoos are so common now.  I see them every day in my practice and they can truly be works of art.  Living in Miami, it seems like just about everyone has a tattoo.  Well the statistics show that actually 24% of adults under 50 have tattoos.  If you have a tattoo and want to remove it, you are not alone.  Around 17% of people with tattoos have considered removing them.  If you have lighter skin, laser tattoo removal is not very risky and works well.  Amateur tattoos are the easiest to remove.  Tattoos with bright colors like yellow are more stubborn.  Usually you need a series of laser treatments to get the job done and unfortunately the newer the tattoo, the more treatments it will require.  In general, it can take anywhere from 5 to 20 sessions to remove a tattoo and sometimes even more than 20 sessions are required for the stubborn ones.  Blisters and itching are common after treatments and it can cost from $200 to $1000 per session depending on the size of the tattoo. Many patients even say that laser tattoo removal hurts more than getting the actual tattoo.  For people with darker skin, laser tattoo removal is much more risky.  The main side effect is scarring and even hypopigmentation or white spots on the skin.  This is because the lasers for tattoo removal cannot tell the difference between the pigment in the tattoo and the pigment in the skin so severe burns in the skin can result.  So everyone should really think carefully before getting a tattoo, but especially if you have darker skin because, in some cases, effective laser removal is not an option.
