I am sure you have all heard about the newest, latest and greatest lasers on the market that melt the fat away. Believe me, I am just as excited as you are…I just had a baby and would LOVE a quick fix for the post baby weight. So in this blog I am going to try to summarize what is out there and get to the bottom of this confusing topic.
The Zerona laser has been out for the longest time. Typically you need a series of six, 40-60 minute treatment sessions spaced 2 to 3 days apart. This low-level laser is supposed to emulsify fat. They have some impressive clinical trials that demonstrate an average reduction of 3.64 inches from the circumference of the waist, hips, and thighs. Although this sounds exciting, I think time will tell if it works in everyday practice.
Zeltique is new device that uses controlled cooling to melt fat. A device is attached to the affected area and it is left to cool the skin for one hour. More than one treatment may be required and results should be obvious in one month. Zeltique sounds very promising because it is based on well known science that cooling fat to a below a certain temperature causes it to melt. However, like all of these devices, the true results will be known when it is used in clinical practice for a significant period of time.
Liposonix is an ultrasound device that has been used to reduce fat of the lower abdomen. It is not yet available in the United States but like the others above, the clinical studies look promising as a treatment for unwanted fat.
So I think overall, the verdict is still out on these fat burning devices. It will take at least one year of clinical “real world” experience to truly find out how effective each of these devices are. I will keep my fingers crossed, but in the meantime, I will just have to keep exercising.
